BNP spokesperson Asaduzzaman Ripon on
Tuesday termed the Election Commission a 'spineless, subservient and
powerless' organisation.
"The BNP requested the EC to defer the polls for at least 15 days. They would have been able to include 5 million new voters for the municipal polls, but they did not pay heed to any of our demands,’ said Ripon at a press briefing at the BNP central office in the city’s Naya Paltan area.
Earlier, the EC said they cannot defer the polls for Bishwa Ijtema and higher secondary exams.
Ripon said the polls would have been held between the gaps of two exams.
A top official of the commission said only 3,00,000 new voters will be listed within 31 January. They won’t be able to vote for the municipal polls even if they defer it for a month.
Ripon also said, “We requested not to arrest our candidates. However, Nandail municipality mayor SM Azizul Islam was arrested on Monday."
